Makonde Post 01

This figurative post comes from the Makonde who are skilled wood carvers from Tanzania. The post is hand-carved from a single piece of indigenous wood, with detailed carving details in the shape of a figure. This post would have been used at the sites of initiations and spiritualistic rituals. They are believed to act as a new physical body for the deceased and as kept in their home after passing and offered gifts in remembrance. 

The post has a beautiful shine to the wood that have developed from years of use and is a natural patina.
