Our R.W. bucket hat stands for Roots and Wings coming from the African proverb - "we desire to pass on two things to our children; the first is roots and the second is wings".
The keepers give the roots, the rehabilitation program fosters the wings, providing confidence and structure for orphans to live wild again.
The embroidery is a baby elephant with our R.W. blankie a critical component of orphaned elephants care, comfort and survival.
Orphaned calves are highly susceptible to the elements, quickly losing body heat without their mother or herd or in need of protection from the sun. Blankets keep them comfortable and feeling safe in their most vulnerable days. Keepers ensure the blankets are fitted snugly at night to stimulate the warmth they would get from their mothers. Much like humans, they become a safety blanket for the calves with the familiarity giving them a sense of security, helping them to self-soothe when feeling stressed or anxious.
