These finely carved containers originate from the Pende people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The container was used by the traditional healer to store traditional medicines, such as dried roots and other plant materials. The containers are believed to hold the healing powers of their ancestors and they would have been carefully guarded in the home of the healer of the community.
