These portrait masks come from the Ivory Coast and are hand-carved from indigenous woods and form part of the Baule society, worn by male performers during dances and ceremonies. The stylistic attributes of each mask are specifically designed by the Baule people as a visual vocabulary that is demonstrative of what it means to be a good, honourable, respected and beautiful person in their society.
