These masks come from the Malinke people of Mali. They are hand-carved from hardwood with hammered metal plates. The masks are ceremonial objects that embody ancestral spirits and are a vital to initiations, agricultural cycles and community rituals. The wearer transforms into the spirit they represents, bringing the community into harmony with the spiritual world.
