Nyangatom Headrest
This headrest comes from Kenya, hand-carved from one piece of indigenous wood and finished with a beautiful braided leather handle.
Headrests were a necessity for the North Western nomadic pastoral tribes of Kenya as they have a cultural custom of wearing elaborate coiffures which the headrests helped to preserve whilst sleeping amongst other benefits of protecting against dust and insects. They are considered to be one of the most important of their few possessions that they travelled with. The different styles of the headrest and decorative details would reflect the age and status of the owner.
We love headrests for their soulful connection to their makers and the unique details that make each one special. Headrests are also increasingly rare to come across so finding a beautiful one to become part of your collection is truly special. Style as a sculptural decorative object.
