Samburu Headrest
This headrest comes from the Samburu people of northern Kenya, hand-carved from one piece of indigenous wood. It has a beautiful wide stable base and curved platform as well as wonderful patina that has developed from years of use.
Headrests were a necessity for the nomadic pastoral tribes of Kenya as they have a cultural custom of wearing elaborate coiffures which the headrests helped to preserve whilst sleeping amongst other benefits of protecting against dust and insects. They are considered to be one of the most important of their few possessions that they travelled with. The different styles of the headrest and decorative details would reflect the age and status of the owner.
We love headrests for their soulful connection to their makers and unique styles like this are increasingly rare to find.
