DESCRIPTION
Increasingly sought after, manilla coil currency originates from the Igbo people of Nigeria and is made from a blend of metals, including copper and brass. Manilla currency dates back as far as the 15th century to as recently as 1948. Small manillas were the main currency of West Africa and fluctuated in value according to the type. Other, more significant manilla’s were used as a store of wealth, prestige and bride price. In 1948 the government withdrew manilla’s from circulation.
