Mangbetu Figure Pot | No.2 | Congo
Our collection of vintage Mangbetu pots have been hand-crafted by the Mangbetu people of the Congo. These distinctive vessels are carved with a beautiful figure detail which celebrates their long practised custom of skull elongation. Shortly after birth, infants soft heads are wrapped with tight cloth to reshape them into a long and protruding shape. The longer the skull, the more beautiful it was deemed and symbolised greater power and intelligence.
Each pot tells the story of their maker with the unique designs, making them one-of-a-kind pieces for your home. These pots would have been used for a variety of tasks from cooking to storage. Whilst each pot has been carefully restored, due to the gentle nature of ceramics and as vintage pieces, the pots may still have natural imperfections.
Our Mangbetu pots are the perfect soulful styling piece for any space. Style with dried foliage and florals or as a decorative vessel.
