Mangbetu Figure Vessel | No.2 | Congo

Hurry, only 1 left in stock!

These beautiful figurative vessels come from the Mangbetu people of the Congo. The shapes of these vessels are inspired by their long practised custom of skull elongation. Shortly after birth, infants soft heads are wrapped with tight cloth to reshape them into a long and protruding shape. The longer the skull, the more beautiful it was deemed and symbolised greater power, intelligence and power.

These vessels are traditionally used during specific tasks such as cooking and are finished with beautiful hand carved details.

All vessels are handmade and due to the natural nature of these ceramics each vessel will be perfectly imperfect and may have minor markings and chips.

Style as a sculptural piece or with some dried plants and flowers.

Height is 44cm
Width is 24cm
