Mama Mask | No.2 | Nigeria
These sculptural Mama masks are skilfully crafted by the Mama people of Eastern Nigeria. The masks are hand-carved from wood in an abstract design that is inspired by the bush cow. The masks are worn with thick fibre costumes during ceremonial dances to provide a protective bush spirit and power of the animal itself to the dancer.
Masks make for beautiful sculptural decorative pieces anywhere in the home. The masks have developed a great patina from years of use and the red pigment comes from the use of camwood which the masks are coated with.
